The Thrift Shop is open for business from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at a new location in Building 76 at Cannon Air Force Base.

The shop is non-profit; it is one of the primary fundraisers of the Spouses Club and run entirely by volunteers. All proceeds are filtered back into the Cannon community.

“We help any organization in need of assistance that reaches out to us,” said Karen Elton, Spouses Club honorary president and thrift shop volunteer. “In the past we’ve provided funds toward children’s homes, local schools, scholarships and even Diamond Sharp award recipients.”

According to Elton, more than $10,000 was donated through thrift shop proceeds in 2011. This year, the shop hopes to surpass that amount.

“We are off to a great start this year,” she said. “In January we were able to make more than $1,500. If we could just get the word out about what we accomplish with these funds, I think more people would want to support our efforts.”

The thrift shop carries an array of items, including clothing, furniture, kitchen appliances and home decor. They accept donations of clean, lightly-used items. If they cannot sell acquired merchandise, they donate it to the Lighthouse Mission, a local organization that feeds the hungry and helps the homeless in practical ways. The shop is attached to the Airman’s Attic, which carries gently-used uniform items.

“We are providing quality items at competitive prices the meet the budget needs of our Air Commandos,” said Paula Zunno, Thrift Shop manager. “The more patrons we receive, the more money we will have to give back to our people. This entire operation is for our community, it is a Cannon specific service.”

Members of the Cannon community are also able to sell items on consignment at the thrift shop. They keep 100 percent of the profit of their sold goods when using this method.

“Hopefully we continue to grow our inventory and patronage on base,” said Elton. “Stop in and take a look around our shop, who knows what you’ll find.”
